Top 12 of 2012

Wow 2012 flew by! I know that each year will continue to go fast but we are going to soak in as much as possible. So much happened over this past year and looking through our thousands of pictures it was really hard to narrow it down to just 12 things but I'm going to try. Get ready for major picture overload! A lot of these are from my Instagram (emilytumis). In no particular order, here are some of my favorite moments of 2012.
1) Spending every waking moment with our newborn while I was on maternity leave was incredible. It was a really fast 7 weeks but it was so fun. Sometimes I miss those days of laying in bed with her sleeping the day away. There were a lot of iPhone pictures taken to send to Dan during the day.
2) Charlotte being baptized was a highlight of the year for sure. That afternoon she smiled and giggled more than she every had. Such a sweet day.
3) Moving into our dream home and being closer to family- It was a wild ride with a new baby, new job and moving, but so worth it. We love it here.
4) Our trip to Italy- I didn't blog about this but in August Dan and I took our 4th trip to Italy. This time it was with Dan's company on his sales incentive trip. We love Italy and hope to take Charlotte there one day.
5) Our first family trip to the Hill Country- Such a relaxing mini vacation for us.
6) Charlotte's First Birthday- What a fun day for us! I had so much fun planning Charlotte's birthday and it was the perfect party for our little lady!
7) Our first visit to Colorado for Thanksgiving- I was really nervous for the drive but it was a great trip!
8) Mother's Day- My first Mother's Day was so special. We spent it with my side of the family and had a large brunch at our house. Such a special day for us.
9) A personal highlight of the year was finding a way to exercise that I truly love. I've already signed up for two races for this year and I'm excited to complete my first half marathon.
10) Finger Painting with Charlotte- I loved when Charlotte was in the snuggle stage, but now that she can kind of do things, it is so much fun. I can't wait for her to help me decorate cookies next year.
11) Spending time outside- Now that we are on a little bit of land we spend a lot of time outside. It is so nice to take C out in the wagon, swim in our pool (I know it's a blow up pool but it counts!) and we don't have to worry about our neighbors watching our every move.
12) Family Visits- We have had so much family come stay with us the past year and we feel so fortunate that they want to come see us! Our new house is also a lot closer to my family so we spend a lot of time together.
2012 is going to be hard to top! Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2013 has started off great for all of you!

Pancakes & Pajamas: Charlotte Turns ONE!

Charlotte turned one this past weekend and we threw her a birthday bash. I have been so excited for Charlotte's first birthday party. With so many little kids coming to the party we decided that early morning would be best. It turned out to be the perfect time and there was not one unhappy kiddo. It was so fun celebrating Charlotte with our friends and family.

Since Charlotte is too little to tell me what she wanted to do for her party I decided on the theme Pancakes and Pajamas. I wanted the party to be girly and not too babyish. She is now a one year old you know?
The food was breakfast of course. Who doesn't love breakfast? The menu was mini buttermilk pancakes, sausage pinwheels, fruit salad, mini muffins, fruit & yogurt parfaits, and mini quiches with cake for dessert.
I wanted to keep the decorations simple with just different color pinks with black and white patterns.
A tree of Charlotte pictures
You can't have a birthday party without a cake. Oh, the cake. It was fabulous and I may or may not be eating it every single day for the rest of my life because we have so much extra. Charlotte loved it too!
Now for the fun pictures of the party.
Both Grandmas, Mia and Grandma
Rebecca and Taylor (9 months)
Thank you to everyone who came to Charlotte's birthday! It was such a fun morning!

Happy Birthday Charlotte!

Miss Charlotte turned a year old this past weekend. We had a big birthday bash on Saturday that I will blog about later. So much happened this past month! The holidays are always a whirlwind and adding C's birthday in the middle has made it even more fun.
Charlotte had her first trip to Colorado to celebrate Thanksgiving. She was a trooper through the 12 hour drive and enjoyed watching Yo Gabba Gabba and Toy Story...the entire drive. I bet you can guess what songs were stuck in our heads the following week!

We had a great time in Colorado and Charlotte loved it there. We have so much to be thankful for and family is definitely one of them!
First Turkey Trot!
Charlotte "talks" all the time. She has so much to say and I wish that I could understand her. She still says "mama" and "dada" mostly but I can tell that she understands so much of what I say. Her favorite thing to do is drop things on the floor. She understands when I tell her no but thinks that if she is looking me in the eye I can't see what she's doing. It's so hard not to laugh. Poor Bella (or maybe lucky Bella?) is going to get so fat from all the food Charlotte drops. It's like an all you can eat buffet for her at meal time.

We also took Charlotte to go see Santa this month. I fully expected her to be terrified (does it make me a bad mom that I was looking forward to it?) but $28 later she was fine!
Then the next week at school Santa came to visit and we got a FREE picture. This one made my day. I hope Charlotte will appreciate this when she is older.
This week we take Charlotte to the doctor for her 12 months visit. I know she is a lot taller than her 9 month appointment. Most of her 24 month pants are too short now. Do they make baby pants in tall?

Just look how much she has changed over the past 12 months.
The past year has been so amazing and wonderful and better than I ever could have imagined. I never knew how much I could love this child. I love her open mouth smile and her giggles that we have to work so hard for. I appreciate how she is a great sleeper and how much she loves her routine. I love that just coming around the corner fast makes her giggle and squeal. The simplest things make Charlotte so happy. She is most definitely a Daddy's girl and she has Dan wrapped around her finger. I wish that we could hit a pause button because time is going by way too fast. I have truly loved every second of this past year. Happy, happy birthday baby girl!

Glass Half Full

Tomorrow is an event that I have been looking forward to for over 4 months. Remember how I made it official that I was signed up for the White Rock half marathon? I put it on here so that it would be set in stone and out for all to see so that I would be held accountable. Well, it worked and I have been so motivated to run the half. 13.1 miles. Four months ago I couldn't even run 10 minutes, or even 5 to be honest. I found an awesome running group that made a HUGE difference in my training.  I have grown to actually enjoy running and I look forward to my long runs and adding miles each week. I have always worked out but running has by far been my favorite.

These past 4 months I have been so paranoid about getting injured or sick and have taken every precaution to prevent that from happening. Last Saturday I completed my 12 mile run and felt awesome. Next would come shorter mileage to taper down for the actual half marathon the following Sunday. Well, life gave me a huge slap in the face Sunday and hit me with the flu. So bad that I passed out at the doctor's office which sent me to the hospital. Don't worry, I'm fine. Just the flu. We even got the flu shot in September!  After the doctor telling me that people die from running races with the flu, I knew that the race was out of the question for the next weekend. Totally out of my control. I was upset at first but I have moved passed it. There will be more races and more goals to meet. So why is the glass half full?
  • I have found a new love of running
  • I have met AWESOME women that I look forward to running with
  • I know that I can run 13.1 miles because I ran 12! What's 1 more mile?
  • I set a goal and even though it didn't turn out as I planned, I 95% met it.
  • I'm 70 pounds lighter that I was a year ago today. Not all of that is due to running but it definitely helped me drop to where I wanted to be.
  • Also, I've enjoyed eating pasta the night before a long run. Something I try to avoid normally.
This training has been a family effort. Dan has enjoyed Daddy/Daughter times on Saturday mornings when I'm out running. He has fully supported me through this and has been my #1 cheerleader. He was so excited to take Charlotte to the finish line to see me cross. He has listened to me talk about my excitement for the event and my new found love for running and has been so encouraging. Hopefully he will still be as excited when I cross the finish line in February when the next half marathon takes place. Well, the half marathon that I plan on running, but who knows what will happen.

My brother, Kade.

I have one brother named Kade. We are 21 months apart and I am the older sibling. Growing up we weren't the type to fight all the time but of course disagreed. We always had different interests and different sets of friends. As we have gotten older, we have become very close. We talk on the phone often and even thousands of miles away (he lives in California) we still know what is going on in each other's lives.  I can call Kade and talk his ear off and he just listens. He just gets me and listens without judgement and offers advice if I need it.

Kade was always the quiet one in our family. He was into climbing trees and building things. I was always the troublemaker and my biggest vice was talking on the phone past 8 p.m. I still talk on the phone a lot now. Times haven't changed much :)

When I started blogging a few years ago I would post pictures of Kade and talk about his visits, etc. For some people that read this blog and have known me and my family they might have been a little confused because growing up, Kade was actually Katie and was my sister. I want to tell the story of Kade (with his permission, of course) and when I am talking about Kade pre transformation I will call him Katie. I know, it can get confusing.

When Katie and I were in high school she told me she was gay. We live in Texas, in a very conservative town and have a very traditional family. I'm not sure if I was surprised at the time, but I do not remember being upset one bit. It didn't really matter to me who Katie was attracted to. Katie was still the same person. After Katie told me she told my parents. Katie was only 14 at the time and they did not understand how she knew she was gay. This was very tough for my parents and I know that they still have questions. It was a big secret for a long time. Katie started hanging out with the wrong crowd and went through some tough times. When I was in college Katie got involved in drugs and was in a bad place. She was self medicating to escape from her pain. My parents got her help. Although it took a long time for Katie to recover, she did and is here with us today because of my parents determination to get her help. At this point, Katie being gay was the least of every one's concerns. She was healthy and that was all that mattered. Katie was diagnosed as severely depressed and had to take medications to get through each day.
Before Dan and I got married Katie decided to move to California with her girlfriend. This was a life changing decision for them. They picked up and moved there and found that they were accepted by more people and loved it. After being in California Katie confided in me that she was taking the steps to become a male. This was not shocking to me and I told him that I would support him in whatever decision he came to I was just happy he was healthy. I'm not positive what all goes into the transformation, but I know it involves a lot of counseling and testerone shots. For once in Katie's life, living as Kade, he felt comfortable in his skin. He also got off all of his medication and felt normal. Coincidence? I don't think so.

When Kade came home for our wedding this was the first time our family and friends would see Kade as a male. I told him that he could be any part of my wedding that he wanted to be, I just wanted him there. When he arrived we went and bought him a shirt and tie to wear for the wedding. I'm sure it was pretty shocking to see Kade in a shirt and tie but no one said anything about his attire. He was the same person, just looked different.
I had never known anyone to be transgendered or knew anyone who knew someone that was. It took years to change my thought process to think from she to he. When I would think about Kade I would have to correct my thoughts and not say Katie. I've read that some people feel as if the person died, but I didn't think of it that way at all. Kade is still the exact same person. So much of our world puts a label on people and to me Kade is just like everyone else.
I tell Kade often that I will be his biggest advocate. I will defend him until the day I die and always be his biggest supporter. I do not care what gender he is. I don't care if he has purple skin or green hair, or tattoos all over him. It doesn't matter because he is still the same person.
I realize that so many people have different views on this and I don't judge them for that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this is mine. My belief is that people are born this way. My mom says that Katie would cry if she was put in dresses as a baby because she wasn't comfortable. When I hear people say that they "don't understand it" and I say that I don't want to understand it. I have no idea what it feels like to not want to be me. Everyone is entitled to be happy

My reason for writing this is to educate people and also to document my amazing, strong brother. I want to tell Charlotte one day Kade's story. I want her to love everyone equal and not judge and know that everyone is different. Life is short and it should be sweet.

This is Kade's story. A big thank you to him for letting me share this portion of his life.

The Santa Debate

When Dan and I first got married we discussed family traditions and we were raised the same for the most part. When it came to the Santa discussion both of our parents had done things different so we would nicely disagree and tabled the discussion until we had kids. There was no use in arguing about something before we needed to. Growing up, I loved the idea of Santa Clause. I know that it is not the true meaning of Christmas, but it is so fun to believe in something so magical. I was saying to a friend recently that I would love to believe that an old man in a red suit would come down the chimney and leave me presents....when I said that out loud it really did sound SO creepy!  Luckily little ones don't think so :)

Growing up Santa would take a bite out of our cookies, feed his reindeer veggies, fill our stockings and leave us a toy or something small, unwrapped. The rest of the gifts were wrapped under our tree from our parents. To me that was always normal. When Dan and I talked about it he told me that his Santa would leave him all of his presents under the tree and they would all be wrapped and his parents wouldn't give him anything. I know it sounds silly that we would even be discussing this, but it is a big deal when you are trying to decided what your own family traditions will be.

The reason I like limited gifts from Santa is that I take a lot of time picking out gifts and Dan and I work really hard to provide for our family. I want Charlotte to know that we took the time to pick things out for her that they are from her parents. Charlotte will also not believe in Santa forever and it might be an easier transition if everything isn't from Santa when that time comes.

I realize that everyone does Santa different in their homes and it's interesting to listen to others talk about their family traditions. Dan
and I are trying to create our own and are having to compromise on things. What is your Santa tradition?
